Properly processed cocopeat can meet these requirements, which is why it has become a popular choice for hydroponic and greenhouse production. Hydroponics is one of the main cultivation methods used in vertical farming and controlled-environment agriculture. The global hydroponics market was valued at about $6.8 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach $11.1 billion by 2031. Growers choose hydroponic systems for efficient water use and precise nutrient control, although results depend on the crop, system design, and management.

Why Growers Are Choosing Hydroponics

Less land and water. Farmland is shrinking and cities are growing. Hydroponic farms can grow more food using less land, often inside or near cities.
Cleaner, more controlled produce. Hydroponic systems reduce contact with soil pests. This allows better control over what goes into the crop. This does not mean the produce has no pesticides at all. It means growers have more control.
Better technology, lower running costs over time. LED lights, sensors, and automation are improving. This helps farms run more efficiently. Energy and setup costs are still high for many large farms. This is an ongoing challenge, not fully solved yet.
Protection from weather changes. Indoor farms reduce exposure to floods, droughts, and unpredictable weather. This matters more as weather becomes less predictable.

Why the Growing Medium Matters

Hydroponic farms do not use soil. Instead, they use a growing medium to hold the roots, store water, and deliver nutrients. Since there is no soil to balance things out, the growing medium plays a big role in plant health and yield. Common growing media include rockwool, perlite, expanded clay, foam, and cocopeat. Each one works differently and suits different crops and systems.

Why Cocopeat Works Well

Holds water and air together. Cocopeat can hold several times its own weight in water. At the same time, it still lets air reach the roots. This balance is hard to get right with other materials. The exact water-holding level depends on how the cocopeat is processed.
Manageable pH level. Hydroponic systems need precise nutrient control. Properly processed cocopeat is generally mildly acidic to near-neutral and can work well with many hydroponic nutrient programs. Actual pH varies according to source and processing, so buyers should verify the batch value rather than rely only on a general product range.
Low salt content, if processed correctly. EC stands for Electrical Conductivity. It measures the salt level in the growing medium. In hydroponic systems, high salt levels can harm plant growth because there is often little natural soil buffering to moderate excess soluble salts. Raw coconut coir can have high salt levels. Good processing removes extra salt through washing. Depending on the product and crop, buffering or conditioning can also help manage the coir's exchangeable potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Always ask a supplier for real test results, not just general claims.
Renewable coir-industry byproduct. Cocopeat is produced during coconut-husk processing for coir fibre, making use of a coir-industry byproduct. Compared with peat moss, which comes from peatlands that form extremely slowly and can take centuries or longer to regenerate, cocopeat can offer a more renewable substrate option. Its overall environmental impact still depends on processing, washing, energy use, packaging, and transport.
Easy and light to ship. Cocopeat can be compressed into blocks. This makes it lighter and cheaper to transport. It expands again once water is added at its final location. This is useful for hydroponic farms located far from where cocopeat is made.

Not All Cocopeat Is the Same

Cocopeat is not a single, standard product. Its quality can change based on where the coconuts come from, how the cocopeat is washed, processed, and stored. Things like EC, pH, moisture level, and expansion volume can all vary. Buyers should check these details for their specific crop and irrigation system. Do not assume all cocopeat is the same. Always ask suppliers for real batch data, not general claims about cocopeat as a category.
